The Woodward L-Series Integrated Engine Control System is the first engine speed control to deliver so much in a package this compact. The L-Series Control System is microprocessor-based, it can easily be programmed to match the operating parameters of every engine you produce. The L-Series offers speed control with softwareselectable speed setpoints, dynamics, fuel limiting, and start/stop behavior.

The traditional bracket mount using external linkage, the L-Series Control System is available in a variety of mechanical configurations, including one integrated into a rotary diesel fuel pump and one integrated with a throttle body or a throttle body and mixer (product spec 03222). The externally mounted systems can be configured for clockwise or counter-clockwise (standard) shaft rotation for increasing fuel.

For status purposes, a relay driver output is available on the L-Series control which changes state whenever a fault or error condition is experienced by the L-Series control. If the system so requires, the L-Series provides a direct position output signal in the form of a dc voltage. The throttle position (TPS) output represents full counter-clockwise (ccw) to clockwise (cw) rotation of the actuator shaft, and thus gives the operator an external position indication after installation and while the unit is operating.

The L-Series control's high-efficiency torque motor delivers 0.34 N.m (0.25 lb-ft) nominally over 60° travel range to operate fuel or air control devices (see specifications for torque performance over the full product temperature range).

The Woodward L-Series combines the L-Series electric actuator with integrated speed control software to control the speed of a diesel or gaseous engine. The L-Series is a microprocessor-based control that is incorporated into the actuator, creating a single integrated package. This eliminates the need for an additional driver box and speed control box. The control uses state-of-the-art speed sensing and control algorithms. The L-Series also performs comprehensive diagnostics for easy troubleshooting. It can be configured and tuned using the L-Series Service Tool. ACCESSORIES

Magnetic Pickups (MPU) are used for speed feedback to the speed controller. Mount one MPU into the engine housing, sensing the flywheel teeth. (The L-series speed control can optionally be configured for speed feedback from ignition system on gas engines.)

The Woodward L-Series Position control accepts either a PWM command or a 0-5V command and drives the 0-60 degree output shaft to the commanded position based on an internal shaft position sensor. The command signals are issued by the appropriate supervisory engine management system, and the L-Series must be set up properly to expect the correct signal for the application.

The Woodward L-Series Process controller incorporated into the actuator, creating a single integrated package. This eliminates the need for an additional driver box and A/F ratio control box. The L-Series process controller accepts a process input signal (e.g., O2, Diff Press, etc.), compares this to the process setpoint, and drives the 0- 60 degree output shaft to the commanded position based on an internal shaft position sensor.

The L-series process controller is not available as a stand alone actuator but as a trim valve or a ITB valve. The ITB will be necessary for high gas flow application, necessary with biogas or for high power output. Sealed ITB bodies are gas tight up to 2bar gas pressure, unsealed valves up to 500mbar.

The EPG 512/524 and 1712/1724 actuator has two shaft ends, one at each side. On section A (see drawing) is a return spring. By turning the actuator by his vertical axis, the direction of operation can be changed. Therefore, no clockwise or counterclockwise version is available of standard 5XX and 17XX EPG actuators. On both ends the shaft ends are 0.375"-36 serrated.

The 512/524 and 1712/1724 EPGs are three-component governing systems for 12 or 24 Vdc operation. All EPG systems include an actuator, an electronic speed control, and magnetic pickup. Both isochronous and droop controls are available. The EPG is designed for precise speed control of diesel, gas, or gasoline engines, and gas turbines. The governor is especially suited to prime movers without a mechanical drive or hydraulic oil supply for the governor, and which have low-mass, low-friction fuel linkages.

Conversion from Flo-Tech to F-Series

The same command and feedback signals currently available on the most commonly used Flo-Tech valves are also available on an F-Series. To simplify the wiring process in a retrofit application, Woodward has designed several cables to adapt the wiring of the popular versions of the Flo-Tech control to the F-Series control. Each adaptor cable is 14 inches (35.5 cm) in length, uses the correct connectors for the intended application, and installs easily by mating to the engine harness originally designed for a Flo-Tech and plugging directly into the F-Series. An example of one of these adaptor cables is pictured in Figure 2- 1.

Selection of the proper cable can be accomplished using Table 2-1. More detailed wiring information regarding the F-Series can be found in Chapter 3 of Woodward manual 26355, F-Series Actuator & Integrated Throttle Body.

For the purpose of the Flo-Tech and F-Series connector configurations in Table 2-1, use the illustrations in Figure 2-2 to match the Flo-Tech and F-Series controls that are being interchanged.

Configure the F-Series ITB to Function Similar to a Flo-Tech Throttle

Given small changes in throttle and throttle plate geometry, the F-Series ITB flow curve has small differences when compared to the Flo-Tech flow curve. To correct this, the Position Demand Curve can be configured to make the F-Series ITB flow curve similar to the Flo-Tech throttle. This is needed if flow at a given position is critical in your Flo-Tech application. For most closed loop controls, this configuration to match the flow curves is not needed.

Setting the "Position Demand In %" and "Position Demand Out %" values to those shown in Table 3-1 will make the F-Series ITB flow curve match the Flo-Tech throttle.

P-Series ProAct

The ProAct series has been produced for many years and has his thirth generation from 2020

The ProAct usually gets mounted on reciprocating engines from 500hp up. It is used for the control of several components on Diesel or Gas/Gasoline engines:

There are three product lines, the first generation of ProActs is still available and has from 2019 a new digital speed control. The third generation from 2020 has RoHs and will replace the second generation ProActs. The main difference is, that generation 1 has a power PWM input, whereas generation 2 and 3 only has a signal input and produces its torque by pulling current out of a separate power supply. At least the larger generation 1 models need a dedicated driver to produce the power PWM, while generation 2 actuators do not. This leads to a better price-value relationship. There is also a ProAct with an integrated speed controller (ISC), comparable to the L-series and F-Series. This item considerably reduces expenses for wiring.

The ProActs are deliverable in four sizes (not for all types), corresponding to different work capabilities. These different sizes are model I, model II, model III and model IV and every model has double the torque and work capability than the next smaller model. From model I to IV the ProAct dimensions differ only by length! Generation 1 models also differ in shaft end diameters. The ISC models have less torque than the corresponding models of Generation 1, Analog or Digital Plus. ProAct Analog is only available as models I and II.

ProAct Digital Plus has marine certifications. The ProAct GEN III has also marine certifications, but also ATEX and RoHs.

ProAct Torque

The ProAct series are deliverable in four sizes (not for all types), corresponding to different work capabilities. These different sizes are model I, model II, model III and model IV and every model has double the torque and work capability than the next smaller model. ProAct Analog is only available as models I and II. The P-Series and GEN 3 doesn't have a model I.

ProAct Command

The ProAct series are Governors and/or Actuators. The Generation I has a driver box or Speed Control who delivers a power PWM to the 75 Actuator. Generation II and III produce their torque by pulling current out of a separate power supply.

The ProAct ISC (PISC) Intergrated Speed Control has a speed controller and onboard. But can also be configured as actuator and followed his signal input.

ProAct Actuator Actuator Shaft

The ProAct Generation I has different shaft dimensions for models I, II,III and IV. Generation II and III have the same shafts.

ProAct Generation I (75)

The ProAct GEN I is designed for direct coupling to the butterfly valve shaft on small gas engines. It is designed for control of most diesel engines and larger carbureted gas engines. The ProAct actuators provide 75° of actuator output rotation to move an attached lever and linkage which sets engine fuel or engine rack settings.

The actuators may be driven by a power PWM signal of ±12A. For ProAct I and ProAct II (i.e. models I and II) speed controllers with PWM output are deliverable from Woodward, which can directly be connected to the actuators. For the larger ProActs III and IV (i.e. models III and IV), a separate driver is essential, because no speed controller has a corresponding output, supplying 21A PWM current.

Two versions of Speed Control has been made. One for general sales and one for MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries), which has an extra limiter in the software.

In 2019 the Speed Control has been renewed as componends became obsolete. This controller has now RoHs. The new Speed Control has to be programmed through CAN with Toolkit where the old used the Handheld. The settings could be transfered from the old Speed Control and only the 'Enertia' need some attention.

Rotation ProAct 75 Actuator

Every Generation 1 actuator type is available with two different connection types: with a MS connector or with two wires led through (conduit connector). The conduit connector version is applicable for hazardous environments (UL).

The actuators are supplied with clockwise (CW) or counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation to rise fuel. Directions are determined by looking at the actuator shaft.

Minimum Fuel Return Spring:The actuator is equipped with a light spring return toward min fuel to prevent drift in case of position signal interruption. Normal operating conditions do not require spring return, as the actuator is powered in both the increase and decrease directions.

ProAct Gen 1 Position Sensor Update

The sensor used for position feedback in the ProAct Gen 1 actuators for years has been discontinued and is no longer available. A new position sensor has been designed into the ProAct Gen 1 actuators and, beginning in April, 2014, all ProAct Gen 1 actuators will be built using this new position sensor.

There are electrical differences between the previous position sensor and the new one. These differences affect the compatibility of the new ProAct Gen 1 actuators with existing ProAct Gen 1 Models I and II speed controls. The old ProAct speed control module does not supply enough electrical drive current to operate the new position sensor, which requires 13 mA max at 5 Vdc. If an older ProAct Gen 1 actuator needs to be replaced, the ProAct Gen 1 speed control must be replaced as well in order for it to be compatible with the new replacement actuator. However, the new ProAct Gen 1 speed control will work with both the older ProAct Gen 1 actuator and the new the ProAct Gen 1 actuator.

The Speed Control power supply for the new position sensor can also be upgraded by a official Woodward dealer. Who will after implementing the hardware upgrade, change the part number of the speed control to indentify the upgrade in the future.

The ProAct 75 Actuators can also be repaired by a official Woodward dealer. Here it is important to know in which application the ProAct 75 Actuator is used. The new position sensor can only rotated in one direction, so if the position sensor is replaced it is important to know the rotation direction.

The old position sensor could work in both direction and changing the wires was enought to change CW to CCW.

The Driver Box for ProAct 75 model I+II Actuators need also a hardware upgrade to supply enough power for the new position sensor in the Actuator. If the Actuator is replaced for a new model or the actuator is repaired and has a new position sensor, the Driver box also have to be send in for the upgrade or should be replaced by a new Driver box. Check the tables below to see which part number the driver box and actuator have to see if they still work togheter. If there is any doubt, send an e-mail with the Driver box part number and the actuator part number.

DESCRIPTION The ProAct Analog is a family of electric actuators with integral drivers intended to be mounted on-engine to control various functions including (but not limited to): fuel rack positioning, timing control, and throttle valve and wastegate positioning.

The device is effectively a position control which will accept a desired position signal from another device in the system, such as a speed control, and drive to that position. Each unit includes an analog driver interface capable of controlling the actuator, and provides a signal that represents throttle position. The actuator can be commanded to a position via 4-20mA, 0-200mA or PWM interfaces.

In addition, given an on board position feedback device, the actual position is available to the system through a position output signal of 0.5 - 4.5 Vdc. This is a highly filtered signal and may not be suitable for closed loop operation. Each member of the has a different input signal specification or bi-directional torque output capability. In addition, each actuator has a nominal rotation of 75° at the output shaft. Two levels of output torque are available, model I and II.

Stroking is done with placing jumpers, no handheld or computer is needed.

MOUNTING AND WIRING The actuators have a 0.625"-36 serrated tooth terminal shaft. It can be mounted in either a base mount or flange mount configuration.

Each member of them has a different bi-directional torque output capability. In addition, each actuator has a nominal rotation of 75° at the output shaft. The units are designed to operate in an on-engine environment and can therefore withstand high levels of vibration and temperature extremes.
